Spring Clean Your Career: Renew, Refresh, and Revitalise

The flowers are starting to bloom, the days grow longer, now’s the time to start spring cleaning… your career. Just like tidying up your home, taking stock of your work situation can breathe new life into your journey, helping you align with your goals, values, and aspirations. So, grab your metaphorical mop and broom, and let's get started - you don’t even need to leave the sofa!!

Update Your CV

Dust off your CV and give it a fresh coat of paint. While you don't need to overhaul it completely (after all, you'll want to tailor it to each specific job application), having a master copy updated with your current responsibilities and achievements can be invaluable down the line. Take the time to jot down your recent accomplishments to make sure your CV reflects your growth and expertise.

Review Your Job Description

While you’re refreshing your CV it can be a good time to revisit your job description and assess whether it still accurately reflects your role. Are you still performing the tasks you were hired for, or have additional responsibilities been added over time? It could be possible to leverage these changes to negotiate a pay increase or promotion. Consider reaching out to HR or your manager to discuss any discrepancies and shine a light on the value you bring to the team.

Reflect on Your Happiness

Take a moment to pause and reflect on your overall satisfaction with your current career. Is your job fulfilling? Does it align with your values and aspirations? Consider asking yourself some of these questions to delve deeper:

  • Am I passionate about the work I do?

  • Do I feel challenged and stimulated in my role?

  • Does my job offer a healthy work-life balance?

  • Are there opportunities for growth and advancement?

  • Do I feel valued and appreciated by my employer?

Conduct a Skills Audit

Take stock of your key skills, strengths, and knowledge areas. Are you fully utilising your assets in your current role, or are there untapped talents waiting to be unleashed? Here’s some questions to help you do your audit:

  • What are my core skills and key expertise?

  • What do I know a lot about (think about training you’ve been on, research you’ve done, books you’ve read / podcasts you’ve listened to)?

  • Am I satisfied with how much I'm utilising my skills in my current role?

  • Are there opportunities to develop new skills or expand my knowledge base?

Your Values

Assess how well your current role aligns with your values and priorities. Does your job allow you to uphold what matters most to you, or are there areas of disconnect?

  • What values are important to me in my work?

  • Does my company culture support these values?

  • Are there aspects of my job that conflict with my values, and if so, how can I address them?
